ADHD Q & A

What is ADHD?

ADHD is a brain disorder affecting a person’s ability to regulate attention, behavior, and executive function. Executive function gives you the skills to plan, organize, make decisions, and control emotions.

Though ADHD is often diagnosed in early childhood, it may not be identified until the teen or adult years. No matter when you’re diagnosed, your symptoms are severe and frequent enough to negatively affect your life, causing poor performance at school and work, disrupting family life, and making it hard to make and keep friends.

How will I recognize ADHD?

There are three types of ADHD, and the symptoms affecting you or your child depend on which type you have:

Inattentive ADHD

People with inattentive ADHD struggle with symptoms such as:

  • Being easily distracted
  • Making reckless mistakes
  • Missing important details
  • Not finishing tasks
  • Losing important items
  • Struggling to stay organized
  • Having a hard time following directions

Children and adults with inattentive ADHD often daydream when they should be paying attention.

Hyperactive-impulsive ADHD

The top symptoms of hyperactive-impulsive ADHD include:

  • Fidgeting or moving around (when you should be still)
  • Talking too much
  • Interrupting others
  • Staying constantly active
  • Acting without thinking

Hyperactive behaviors tend to change as you get older. For example, instead of fidgeting, adults may feel frustrated and nervous.

Combined ADHD

People with combined ADHD have some symptoms of inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive ADHD.

How is ADHD treated?

Your Sunshine Psychiatry provider begins by completing a thorough psychiatric assessment and learning the details about the symptoms and issues faced by you or your child.

Then, they ask you or your child to perform the QbTest®, an advanced ADHD test that accurately and objectively measures attention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. The test is suitable for children six and older. They only need to press a button in response to graphics displayed on a computer monitor.

After testing is finished, your provider creates a customized treatment plan, which may include:

  • Medication (stimulant and non-stimulant)
  • Behavioral therapy
  • Treatment for co-occurring mental health disorders
  • Social skills training
  • Parent training
  • Lifestyle recommendations (to improve diet, sleep habits)

Therapy improves the ability of you or your child to function in daily life, whether you need to learn how to stay organized, manage your emotions, or cope with any of the life challenges caused by ADHD.
